Issue 100 April 2024

Firstly, let me start with some good news this month. We know that many of you were concerned that the cemetery gates were missing. But we subsequently found out that they had been removed by Ramsey Town Council for refurbishment. They have now been reinstated and what a fantastic job has been carried out. Apparently, the work was done by David Bullen, who works for E G B Welding. A true craftsman.

Now for some even better news! We have a working toilet at the chapels at last, which means that we can open for Ramsey’s Heritage Day on Sunday 7th of April. Opening times are 11am to 4pm and we have lots of nearly new second-hand books for sale, a giant tombola and children’s lucky dip and 1 or 2 surprises.

So come along and see what has been done so far.

There is still a way to go with the restoration of the non- conformist chapel, but we are now working closely with Ramsey Town Council to work out the way forward. It’s so nice to have their support for our project and I’m sure that if we all work together then we can once again have a historic building that Ramsey can be proud of. So, watch this space.

Our thanks also to Gary Judd and Steve Corney for sorting out the electricity in the Anglican Chapel and the chandeliers are now in working order. It’s been quite difficult at times this winter for us to be there with no lighting and I would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

Our photographs of Ramsey Abbey last month elicited quite a response and we have been given this lovely old sepia photograph of the Gate House. Unfortunately, we don’t know the date that it was taken, and we would love to find out the name of the gentleman riding the horse and cart. So, if any of you sleuths out there have any idea, then please let us know.

  • Do you know the name of the gentleman driving the horse and cart?

If you do, please contact us

We look forward to seeing you all on the 7th of April and thank you all for your continued support, especially as we have been unable to open for the last 9 months.

Please see our official Facebook page, “Ramsey Mortuary Chapels” and our website: -  www.ramseymortuarychapels.org.uk for up-to-date information regarding our opening times.
